Let’s be honest. Starting an MBA at Cambridge is exciting, but it can also feel incredibly overwhelming. This is especially true when preparing to move more than 11,500 km away from tropical Indonesia to a chilly Cambridge climate. Suddenly, the critical question becomes how to maximise this experience to drive meaningful impact, fulfilling the true purpose of such a significant educational investment. And that is before even tackling the logistical adventure of figuring out what to pack or how to handle a freezing winter.
Naturally, I wanted to connect with alumni and current students from my home country to navigate these initial questions. What started as a quick chat with just one alumnus and one cohort member quickly scaled into a much larger initiative. Invitations poured in, resulting in offline and online meetups in Jakarta that brought together eight alumni to speak with our incoming group.

During these sessions, the discussion quickly elevated from simple packing lists to high-level strategic advice on maximising the Cambridge experience. We focused on three core areas:
- Navigating the Academic Rigor: Strategies for managing the intense academic terms and prioritising coursework effectively.
- Immersing in the Cambridge Experience: How to balance the MBA workload with the unique traditions of the wider university, from collegiate life to formal halls.
- Executing a Career Pivot: How to leverage the broader Cambridge ecosystem to successfully transition into consulting and other competitive roles.
- Cultivating Strategic Relationships: The importance of building meaningful, long-term connections rather than simply collecting contacts.
Hearing firsthand experiences from those who have successfully executed this exact transition transformed my initial anxiety into actionable preparation and confidence.
This experience reinforced a key insight from my admissions interview with Juliana Kozak Rogo, the Director of the Cambridge MBA. She noted that the connections between students are the true heart and lifeblood of the program. Having seen this network in action, I completely understand what she meant. It is deeply inspiring to witness the support system inherent in the Cambridge community. If you are preparing to start your MBA journey, my primary recommendation is to engage with your country’s alumni network first. A single targeted connection can unlock an entire ecosystem ready to support you every step of the way.
A special thank you to Anggara (Diaz) from Cohort 2022, Aun Azmi from Cohort 2023, and Reynaldo Jonathan from Cohort 2024. Your leadership in mobilizing your cohorts created an invaluable foundation for us all.
