Recently, the CAMSE (Culture, Arts, Media, Sports, Education) SIG organised a trek to Warner Music Group’s offices in London. Warner Music is one of the “big three” record companies with a global presence and portfolio of labels under its umbrella, including Atlantic Records, Reprise Records, and Elektra Records. Artists signed to Warner under these labels include Ed Sheeran, Chappell Roan, and Green Day.
The event was open to the entire Cambridge Judge Business School community, and it was so wonderful having students from the different Cambridge Judge programmes and to be able to represent the University of Cambridge. Thank you so much to alumnus Damien Yare, VP of Emerging Markets at Warner Music Group, for helping our group organise such a wonderful and memorable trip to the London offices. The goal of this trek was to shed a light on the types of opportunities within the music business that might be overlooked whilst MBA, MFin, and MPhil students conduct their job searches. We wanted to show that a degree in business is applicable to a wide variety of fields and industries, not just finance and consulting. The trek started with a short tour of Warner Music’s offices in Kensington, which included a whole host of creative spaces for artists to collaborate with executives.

Next, we heard from a few different executives within Warner Music who gave a short talk about their positions, followed by an informal Q&A and dialogue. We had the privilege of hearing from Charlie White (VP of Strategy and Development, Emerging Markets) who spoke about the evolving business models in the music space and how this affects the revenues of Warner Music, spurred by the tech disruptors such as Spotify who have revolutionised legacy distribution and royalty music rights models. Chip Horne (Director of Product Operations) discussed the internal and external manners in which Warner Music uses and optimises data. Nazli Yirtar (Marketing Director, Emerging Markets) and Jay Julès (VP of Creative – EMEA) both discussed marketing strategy for artists in growing economies and how that works in concert with the search for undiscovered talent.

Most importantly… we got merch!
Overall, it was an extremely successful event. Once again, we’re so grateful to Damien Yare at Warner Music Group for hosting us!
